Admissions Policies & Procedures

As a small alternative school, we have developed admissions procedures for prospective students with the DAS community. Our admissions procedures include:

 

Completing registration package

Being selected through the Lottery

 

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available spaces for the school year, we will hold a lottery to fill the spots and a waiting list will be established in accordance with the Toronto District School Board's admissions policy.

 

Sibling Entry

If a student is admitted to Downtown Alternative School at Junior Kindergarten (e.g., September 2019), it is possible for his/her sibling to attend the school without going through the lottery procedure.  The sibling would have to be entering Junior Kindergarten during the following September (e.g., September 2020).

 

If a student is admitted to Downtown Alternative School at any other grade than (e.g., September), Junior Kindergarten, it is possible for his/her sibling to attend the school, but they must go through the lottery procedure (JK only) or added to the waiting lists (SK to Grade 6).  If there is no spot available for entry, the sibling would remain on the waiting list until a spot becomes available.  There is no guarantee that an offer of admission will occur the following September (e.g., September 2020).   

 

Waiting List

Once a student is placed on the waiting list for admission, the parent must attend the Open House of the following year to indicate their interest in remaining on the waiting list.

 

Open House

Tuesday, January 29th 2019, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

 

If you are unable to attend the Open House, please contact the school for an application package .

 

Limitations: As a small alternative school, DAS is allocated a Special Education Resource teacher for two days a week, and we do not generate an ESL teacher.
